Ring Sizes for Children and Teenagers

Typical children's ring sizes by age, how quickly fingers grow, and how to buy a ring a child can wear for more than one season.

4 min read

Children's fingers grow steadily and unevenly, so a ring bought today may not fit next year. A little planning makes the purchase worthwhile.

Typical ranges by age

These are broad averages only and vary widely between children:

  • Ages 3 to 5: roughly US 1 to 2, about 13 to 14 mm inside diameter.
  • Ages 6 to 9: roughly US 2 to 3½, about 14 to 15 mm.
  • Ages 10 to 12: roughly US 3½ to 4½, about 15 to 16 mm.
  • Ages 13 to 16: approaching adult sizes, often US 4½ to 6.

Always measure rather than relying on age, especially for a gift.

Measuring a child

Use the paper-strip method on the finger the ring will be worn on. Children fidget, so take three readings and use the largest. Measure at a calm moment, not straight after running about, since small fingers swell noticeably.

Buying for growth

  • Choose a plain resizable band in silver or gold rather than a fixed-size design.
  • Avoid full eternity settings, tension mounts and tungsten, which cannot be altered.
  • Consider a slightly larger size worn on a chain until it fits, for a milestone gift.
  • Adjustable open-back rings work well for younger children.

Safety considerations

Rings on very young children carry a genuine risk of being swallowed or of catching on play equipment. Most jewellers advise waiting until at least school age, and choosing smooth, low-profile designs with no protruding claws.

Teenagers

Teenage fingers can change size within a single year during growth spurts. If you are buying a significant piece for a sixteenth or eighteenth birthday, confirm with the retailer that a free resize is included in the first year.

Keeping a record

Write down the measured inside diameter in millimetres along with the date. A record of two or three measurements a year apart makes it easy to predict the size that will fit at the next occasion. Use the converter to translate that millimetre value into whatever national size the retailer uses.
