Buying Rings Online Without Sizing Regret
A checklist for ordering rings from the internet: what to ask, what to verify, and how returns and resizing policies differ.

Online jewellery is cheaper and the choice is far wider, but you cannot try before you buy. A short checklist removes most of the risk.
Before you order
- Measure your finger at the end of the day, twice, on separate days.
- Convert the result to inside diameter and circumference in millimetres.
- Ask the seller for the ring's inside diameter, not just its size code.
- Ask for the band width and the interior profile, flat or comfort fit.
- Confirm whether the ring is resizable and by how many sizes.
- Read the returns window and who pays return postage.
Why millimetres matter more than codes
A "size 8" means one thing in the US, something completely different in Japan, and nothing at all in Germany. Sellers who publish a millimetre measurement are giving you the only figure that cannot be misinterpreted. If a listing has no millimetre value and the seller will not provide one, that is a reason to shop elsewhere.
Free sizing kits
Many online jewellers post a plastic or paper sizing gauge free of charge. Plastic reusable sizers are far more accurate than printable paper charts, which depend on your printer's scaling being exactly right. If you do print a chart, verify it by measuring the printed ruler with a real one before trusting it.
International orders
Factor in customs duty, import VAT and the practicality of returning an item overseas. A cheap ring can become expensive once duty and return postage are added, and an exchange for a different size may mean paying import charges twice.
Warning signs
- No returns on "custom" items where the only customisation is the size.
- Stock photography with no measurements or hallmark details.
- Prices far below the market for the stated metal and stone weight.
- No physical address or company registration anywhere on the site.
After delivery
Try the ring on at room temperature, not straight out of a cold delivery van. Test it over the knuckle in both directions. If it needs soap to go on, it is too small. If it spins freely and falls off when you shake your hand loosely, it is too big.
Keep the packaging until you are certain, and use the converter to double-check the ring you received matches the millimetre size you ordered before the return window closes.
