Ring Size: Diameter vs Circumference in mm

Mixing these two measurements up is the single most common home sizing mistake — and it produces a ring three sizes too big.

Quick answer

Diameter is the distance across the inside of the ring; circumference is the distance around it. Circumference = diameter × 3.14159. A 17.3 mm diameter is a 54.3 mm circumference.

Which one did you measure?

  • String wrapped around your finger → circumference.
  • Ruler across the inside of a ring → diameter.
  • Printable chart circles → diameter.
  • Plastic sizer strip through a buckle → circumference.

Converting between them

To go from circumference to diameter, divide by 3.14159. To go the other way, multiply by 3.14159. In inches, divide the millimetre figure by 25.4.

For example: a 54 mm circumference ÷ 3.14159 = 17.2 mm diameter = 0.677 inches.

Which measurement do sizing systems use?

  • US, UK, Japan and Switzerland: derived from inside diameter.
  • EU / ISO: the inside circumference in millimetres, used directly as the size number.
  • Most jeweller's mandrels are marked in both.

Frequently asked questions

Is ring size the diameter or the circumference?

It depends on the country. European sizes are the circumference in mm; US and UK sizes are based on the diameter.

What is 54 mm in ring size?

If 54 mm is a circumference it is an EU 54, a US 7 and a UK N½. If it were a diameter it would be far too large for any finger.
