Stacking a Wedding Band With an Engagement Ring

How to size and choose a wedding band that sits flush against an engagement ring without rubbing, gapping or feeling tight.

5 min read

Two rings worn together behave differently from either one alone. Sizing and shaping them as a pair avoids the two classic complaints: an ugly gap under the stone, and a stack that feels a size too small.

Size them together

Two 2.5 mm bands worn side by side act much like a single 5 mm band, which means the pair fits tighter than the engagement ring did on its own. If the engagement ring was already snug, size the wedding band a quarter size up, or have both checked together on a sizing mandrel.

Closing the gap

A solitaire with a high setting often leaves a visible wedge of space between the band and the stone. Options:

  • A contoured or shaped band, cut to follow the profile of the setting.
  • A chevron or V-shaped band for pointed or pear settings.
  • A curved band that arcs around the mount.
  • Choosing a lower setting for the engagement ring in the first place.

Preventing wear

Two rings rubbing together will wear each other, especially if one is a harder metal. Matching metals is the simplest solution. If you want to mix, put the harder metal on the outside and expect to have both polished periodically.

Order of wearing

Tradition in the UK and US places the wedding band closest to the heart, with the engagement ring stacked outside it. Practically, some people prefer the reverse so the engagement ring sits flat against the finger and does not tip. Either is fine.

Soldering the pair

Many jewellers will solder an engagement ring and wedding band together into a bridal set. This stops rotation and rubbing and makes the pair easier to put on. The trade-off is permanence: the joined set can no longer be worn separately, and resizing becomes a bigger job.

Sizing after marriage

Fingers change over decades. If a soldered set becomes tight, resizing is still possible but more complex because the join must be reworked. Check the fit annually and measure with the converter so you can record the change in millimetres rather than guessing.

Buying at different times

If the wedding band is bought long after the engagement ring, do not assume the old size still applies. Measure again, wearing the engagement ring, and take the fit of the pair as the target.
